With more than a decade of military service, he served as a Mountain Infantry Platoon Leader, Ski-Mobility Company Executive Officer, a Bradley Commander, and as an Operations Officer for Montana’s 1-163rd Combined Arms Battalion.
After Tulane, Sterling returned home and earned his Juris Doctor from the West Virginia University College of Law, where he was recognized for excellence in Alternate Dispute Resolution and Business Transactions Drafting. He also served as a Court-Appointed Mediator at the Monongalia County Courthouse and the Mediation Coordinator for the West Virginia University College of Law.
Prior to joining Mountain & Valley Law Firm, Sterling began his legal career at Judnich Law, where he practiced family law before founding his own firm, Fitzwater Law. In his solo practice, he focused primarily on defending clients facing felony charges across the state, from Helena to Livingston. He has handled cases ranging from possible sentences of over 100 years of incarceration to low-level misdemeanors and traffic citations. He prepares every case as if it is going to trial, approaching each matter with disciplined preparation and steady resolve. At Mountain & Valley Law Firm, Sterling continues to handle criminal defense matters and traffic citations. He also handles mediations, expungements, wills, civil litigation, and family law cases.
Sterling values responsibility and leadership developed through years of demanding work and public service. He brings that same steadiness, accountability, and relentless preparation to the clients he serves. Outside of work, he coaches Muay Thai at Montana Mixed Martial Arts and enjoys snowboarding, playing guitar, and anything related to the blues.
